Remembering Names and Faces

In a fine day and in a good mood, if ever we meet and get introduced for the first time, I’d smile, say hello and have a little chat. And then we accidentally meet again a week after in a mall or in a crowded place and you smile at me and I appear to have a blank expression, don’t feel bad. The surest thing is that, I can’t recognize the face and associate it with a name. And if you’d say hello, and I managed to reply despite a startled gaze, it’s just that my brain is still deciphering who you are, where and when we first met. I need a second introduction or maybe a reminder, which may be embarrassing for me. But then, I can now remember you for a very long time.

In another scenario, if we meet for the first time in a foul mood, you ranting and cursing, and hurling expletives at me or any of my companions at any moment, and I happen to get your name, my brain will work in a certain degree to imbed your name and face. I shall certainly remember you for a very long time.

Is there a cure for this malady?

memory comes with age. i too was often lodged in that situation and the best thing i cud do is just smile back and ask "saan na nga tayo nagkita?" it works everytime sans the embarrassment.

nice blog. have a great day.

sunjun, it's something more of a retaliatory thing, somewhere at the opposite end of fear.

I'm having the same problem too. Maybe it's true then, that the good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow and the awful things you do to others are never forgotten for a long time, even for a lifetime - i guess the same applies when remembering peoples' names.

i guess normal ranang in-ana...kanang makaremember ka more sa tawo nga maassociate nimo sa more intense gani nga situation...our brains are more stimulated when in contact with the kind of situation...for example: di ba mas makaremember man ta sa mga bati nga nahitabo sa atong nasud kay sa mga nindot nga nahitabo? i guess it has to do with the way our brains process information...if the stimulus is associated with another intense stimulus (ie. mas makarember ka sa name sa katong day nga foul imong mood) then it would be more likely that you can remember it compared to those stimulus which is not associated with intense feelings or emotions...ahehehe...
